Opposite, herdsmen's huts are lined up along the road: between the last and the penultimate, a small path leads to the Camargue cross imagined by Hermann Paul in 1926 at the request of the Marquis de Baroncelli. Make the detour to observe this original work, a symbol of Camargue identity. Composed of an anchor (Hope) surmounted by a heart (charity) and a cross (faith) whose three ends end in a trident, it stands solitary at the edge of the lagoon pond.
After leaving the village, you will find on your left a small road leading to the Tiki III pier, at the mouth of the Petit Rhône. It is also along this road that is the tomb of the Marquis Baroncelli: "here is buried one of those who worked during their life for the defense of the traditions of the Camargue" warns a panel at the entrance to this space delimited by red and white barriers. In the center the tomb, placed on a circular base, was built on the site of Simbéu (the symbol), the farmhouse where the Marquis lived at the end of his life and which was destroyed during a bombardment in 1943.
The road then turns north and goes deeper into the Camargue countryside: you walk along salicornia-covered samphires where herds of bulls appeared and pass in front of a few Mas, including that of Amarrée, where the Marquis will settle. from Barroncelli to arrived at Saintes Maries de la Mer. Today, horseback riding is offered there. After driving about 4 km, turn left on the D85 which gives, 200m further, on the hours, this large platform propelled by two paddle wheels takes you.
